Dracut Girls Track falls to Billerica

The Billerica High girls track team finished its regular season last Tuesday with a 78-66 victory over Dracut, allowing the Indians to finish with a 3-2 record in the Merrimack Valley Conference’s Small School Division.

Emily Sullivan continued her fine season by winning two events, finishing first in the 400-meter run in 1:04.6 and also capturing the pole vault after clearing 7 feet, 6 inches.

Billerica won the meet thanks to dominance in the distance events and the throwing events.

In the mile, two mile and 800, the Indians outscored the Middies 23-4 and took 19 of a possible 27 points in the discus, shot put and javelin.

In the two mile, Monique Girard led a 1-2-3 finish in 12:58 while Meghan Sullivan (13:08.8) and Michelle Cody were close behind.

The mile saw Nikki Croteau win in 5:41.5 with Jessica Girard finishing second in 5:49.1.

In the 800, Louise Comerford was the winner in 2:23.6 while teammate Rebecca O’Brien was second in 2:45.

Billerica swept both the shot put and the discus. Casey Meagher (76 feet, 10 inches), Nicole Jepeal (74-3) and Lauren Rogers (69-4) earned nine points in the discus while Val Massa (27-7), Katie Newcomb (25-6) and Ashley Toland (24-7) did the same in the shot put. The Indians also added a third-place point in the javelin courtesy of Sara Speziale’s throw of 76-2.

Other winners for BMHS were Meghan McCarty in the high jump (4-10) and Jackie Price in the long jump (13-6). Second-place points were scored by Marcy Mannarino in the 100-meter high hurdles (19 seconds), Ashley Sawyer in the 300 low hurdles (53.6) and the high jump (4-8), Kaleigh McGrath in both the 200 (29.4) and triple jump (28-10 3/4) and Heather Perkins in the pole vault (6 feet). Third-place performances went to Sawyer in the 200 (29.5) and Melissa O’Neill in the high hurdles (19.5).
