$40 cash bail for drunk driving accident?
A 39-year-old Dracut man is facing charges he was drunk when he struck and seriously injured a motorcycle rider and then dragged his motorcycle down Varnum Road while trying to escape yesterday afternoon.
Police say Todd W. Lawrie, of 105 Overlook Terrace, was behind the wheel of a 1999 GMC pickup that struck a Harley Davidson driven by
Raymond J. Castonguay, 34, of 215 Brook Village Road, Nashua, about 4:45 p.m., Lt. Tony Archinski said.
Castonguay suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg and broken ribs, and was flown to a Boston hospital by MedFlight, Archinski said. His condition was not immediately available last night, but he was expected to survive.
Neighbor Lissa Parsons did not see the initial accident, but saw the motorcycle getting dragged. “He drove with the motorcycle jammed under the truck,†Parsons said. “He kept dragging it. It was sparking and making noises.â€
Robert Goulet was one of five or six residents who attempted to get the driver of the truck to stop after he had hit the motorcycle. “We were all running after the pickup truck,†he said. “We yelled at him to stop but he kept going.â€
Skid marks and broken glass littered Varnum Road in a trail that ended where Lawrie’s truck came to rest with the motorcycle mangled under the front of the truck.
Lawrie was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol with serious injury and negligent operation, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, attempting to leave the scene of a personal-injury accident, marked lanes violation and speeding, Archinski said. He may also face more charges when the investigation is complete.
Lawrie posted $40 cash bail and was released last night.
